p.1 After A New Yacht - Ramona to be replaced by Thousand Islands Steamboat company with larger yacht; Ramona will be used for charters.

Reported Sale - of steamyacht Castanet, of Visger line, to Mr. Miller.

Jan. 19, 1909

p.1 Centenarian Dead - Solomon Boyd sailed Great Lakes for 30 years.

p.2 City Council - (part) Ald. Elliott moved, seconded by Ald. Tweddell, that the harbor master be requested to define the harbor line in and around the city harbor, above and below the bridge.

Ald. Elliott said that the waterway below the bridge is being completely closed up. There must be a harbor line, beyond which no wharf or pier can extend. Below the bridge, old piers and sunken barges are lying, and should be removed, as they were merely obstacles. The motion was adopted.

p.5 A New Plan Approved - Detroit, Jan. 19th - Lake vessel owners are gathering here for consideration of the proposed new plan for carrying insurance on their vessels. The idea advanced is to form an association among the vessel owners to take over a part of the insurance. In this way, the owners contend, they will be able to ascertain whether or not the underwriters are charging a rate higher than is necessary when the amount of loss to vessel property is considered.

p.6 Holds His Position - J. Alfred Goodearle, general manager of the Turbine Steamship Co., Hamilton, holds his position by the steamboat merger of the Hamilton Toronto boat lines. Mr. Goodearle, says the Hamilton Times, is a gentleman of wide experience and very capable, has a splendid record as a business getter, and is well thought of in marine and other circles.

p.7 Wolfe Island Council - .....steamboat accounts paid: James Crawford, one month, captain, $50; James Davis, thirty-one days, mate, $41.33; R. Mullen, one month, engineer, $66.66; E. Walker, thirty-one days, fireman, $36.16; John Crawford, and R. Kiel, thirty-one days, deckhands, $26.66 each; G. Keegan, thirty-one days, purser, $31; Mrs. Davis, thirty-one days, cook, $20.66; Mrs. Rawley, washing, $4; G. Keegan, 744 meals, $89.28; Mrs. Keegan, $6.98; W. Taylor, $1; McKelvey & Birch, $9.85.

Jan. 20, 1909

p.2 Capt. William Matthews, of Brighton, Capt. Frances Barnhardt, of Deseronto, and P. Dogherty, marine engineer, of Oswego, N.Y., are in the city, to attend a meeting of marine men tonight to discuss coal rates.

p.6 Montreal Transportation Co. - The Montreal Transportation company held its annual meeting, on Monday, when a satisfactory report and balance sheet was read. All the directors of the company were re-elected, and L.L. Henderson was elected to the board in place of the late J.A. Cuttle. Mr. Henderson is the newly appointed manager.


Marine Matters.

Not in years has there been such such a poor winter in marine building. Things are awfully dull in that line here.

The M.T. Co. called for tenders for the construction of a number of steel barges but found the price too high and has decided not to build at present.
