Cleveland, Feb. 8th - Advices received indicate that the assurance predicted by the members of the advisary committee that most of the tonnage that has not been pledged to the new insurance plan will come in will be verified. The Canadian vessel owners think well of the plan and Chairman Ashley has received letters from managers on the other side stating that they are ready to join the movement, which they think will be a benefit to all owners of vessel property. The general opinion is that the vessel owners that are not in will be lonesome.

The agreement will be sent to Ottawa February 11th, when the annual meeting of the Dominion Marine Association will be held, and it is expected that all the leading Canadian vessel owners will sign it. Representatives of the package freight lines have not signed the agreement, but the members at the committee are confident that their signatures will be secured during the next week.



Toronto, Feb. 8th - The Merchant Shipbuilding company for the contract to the Sunderland (England) shipbuilding company (sic) for the construction of a steel vessel to be called the Mapleton, which will carry the largest cargo of grain through the canals without breaking bulk of any vessel on the route between Port Arthur and Montreal. The steamer will be capable of carrying 80,000 bushels without having to break bulk at Port Colborne or any other point, and will carry this quantity direct to Montreal. The steamer will cost about $160,000.

Wolfe Island Council

(part) - Moved - Grimshaw-Greenwood, that James Crawford be appointed captain for steamer Wolfe Islander at $600 for one year, payable monthly. Carried. Moved,Greenwood-Niles, that Gregory Keegan be appointed purser at salary of $1 per day - Carried. Moved, Greenwood-Grimshaw, that G. Keegan furnish meals for steamer Wolfe Islander for 1909 at 12 cents per meal - Carried.

The Marine Report - Ottawa, Feb. 8th - the report of Justice Cassells on the marine department will be debated in parliament.

Ottawa, Feb. 9th - In the House of Commons, yesterday, E.M. Lewis, West Huron, introduced a bill to regulate the load line of vessels plying on inland waters and engaged in the coasting trade, so as to prevent disasters which have occurred through fault of overloading. The restrictions in respect to overloading on inland waters would apply only between September 15th and May 15th. The bill also contains a clause fixing a load line for barges. Another provision of the bill is that captains of ships, when leaving port, must leave with the customs officer a complete list of names and addresses of all people on board. The main object of the bill, Mr. Lewis said, was to prevent loading on decks. The bill is based on a measure in force in Great Britain.



L.L. Henderson Remembered By M.T. Co. Staff.

Lawrence L. Henderson, recently appointed general manager of the Montreal Transportation company, was waited upon Monday afternoon, by the officials, staff and employees of the different departments of the Kingston branch of the company, and made the recipient of a handsome gift, in the form of a punch bowl and other elegant dinner table services. The presentation took place in the offices of the company, which were gaily decorated in honor of the occasion. In addition to the staff, there were present quite a large number of prominent citizens. The gift was accompanied by an address, which was in book form. Francis King, solicitor for the company, read the address and made the presentation.

Mr. Henderson replied feelingly. R. Fraser, marine superintendent, James Murray for the river captains, Edward Bennett for the elevator staff, and Henry Thurston, mechanical superintendent, spoke, as did also W.F. Nickle, Edw. J.B. Pense, H.W. Richardson, Robert Crawford, W.R. Givens, Dr. Ross, Captain Fraser, Edward Bennett, James Murray, Henry Thurston and W.J. Murray - all testified to the geniality and manly fairness of Mr. Henderson, to the regret at the loss of a strong captain of industry, but to the satisfaction of having at Montreal, as in several other ports, one who brings credit and friendship to Kingston. The formal address was:

"The new title by which we address you indicates no empty honor, but, rather, in these days, when commerce rules the world, an office of peculiar importance in which executive ability, untiring energy, and well trained experience are required to win success; and it is because we know you to possess these qualities in abundant measure that we the officials, staff and employees of the various departments of the Kingston branch of the Montreal Transportation company, tender to you our sincerest congratulations and best wishes upon the occasion of your elevation to the responsible position you now occupy as general manager of the company.

"It is of course with deep regret that we see duty call you away from the immediate sphere of your labor, and we realize that in your removal to Montreal, we will lose the advantage and pleasure of your direct supervision of our work, and to a great extent our opportunities for enjoying in personal contact your friendly counsel and advice. We realize too that you have not decided easily and without regret to leave your native city, in which you have formed so many business relations, and where you and your wife and family have made so many friends. But consolation lies in the fact that fortune beckons you, and we believe, that while in the future, your eyes may look upon a broader horizon, your mind and energies may be bent upon a more strenuous conflict, and your judgement may at times condemn the narrow faults and petty mistakes of your Kingston office, none the less your heart will still beat in sympathy with those who for so long have served under and worked with you here, and in the future, as in the past, when reprimands are deserved, justice will be tempered with mercy.

The fleet over which you assume control is no mean factor in the commerce of the country. Its vessels patrol the waters from the far shores of the western wheat fields to the very edge of the great Atlantic, and products of field and furnace more valuable in their immense bulk than the freight of Argosies of old, are carried back and forth. It would be a vain thing to wish you success in managing this fleet, to wish for your vessels full cargoes and safe voyages, without promising to do what we can to help your efforts, and in conclusion therefore we pledge to you our earnest endeavors to render you constant and faithful assistance in attaining that full measure of prosperity for the company which we all desire."

Milligan, lake captains; James Murray, river captains; James Kirkwood, lake schooners; Edward Bennett, elevator staff; Henry Thurston, mechanical superintendent; R. Taylor, lake engineers; George Henderson; N. Malette, river barges; James Gowan, stores department; W.H. Cassidy, shipyard foreman; William J. Murray, grain shovellers.

The question of the liability of the Donnelly Wrecking company in regard to repairing the water works' wharf, which it has had under lease for years was up for consideration. The city solicitor last year advised that the company was liable. It was decided to appoint Prof. A.K. Kirkpatrick and W. Gates to prepare an estimate of the cost of putting the wharf in repair. The matter will then be again referred to the city solicitor for advice as to what action should be taken.

p.8 The New Manager Named - E.A. Turner, of Montreal, a relative of the late J.A. Cuttle, has been appointed local manager of the Montreal Transportation company here, and will take up his duties early in March.
