2. OUR A P O L O G I E S The first order of business in this issue, even before we get to the Marine News wh ich n o r m a l l y begins at the top of Page Two, is to apologize for the a b s o l u t e l y d r e ad ful a p p e a r a n c e of the last (Mid-Summer) issue. As most of you will be aware, we wo r k v er y hard to make "Scanner" look as good as possible, for we know that a p u b l i c a t i o n w h i c h purports to be s c h o l a r l y must appear to be s c h o l a r l y or else n o b o d y will bother to read it. With the help of our ne w J a p anese w o n d e r - m a c h i n e typewriter, we turn out copy that is co r r e c t l y sp ace d for each page and is ready for the printers in all respects. Un f or tu na te ly , the p r i n t i n g firm w hich has hand l e d for some twelve years the p r i nt in g of "Scanner" (except for the cover blanks and the photopages) dr op p e d the ball last issue. De spite our usual specific instru ctions, our page sp aci ng was not m a i n t a i n e d but rather was totally ruined, and it was ex p l a i n e d to us that the pe r s o n who should have chec k e d the order before it went out was more i n t e r e s t e d in his im minent dep a r t u r e on v a c a t i o n and ob v i o u s l y was c o m p l e t e l y o b livious to the r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s of his position. We have made it clear to the p r i nting firm that any recur r e n c e of this s i t ua ti on will result in the i m m ediate taking of our w ork elsewhere, and we have been p r o m i s e d an adjus t m e n t on the cost of the next issue, w h i c h should prove to be of assistance to our financial position. We say all of this here in "Scanner" not to e m barrass the printer, but to make ce rta in that all of our readers kno w how firmly we are c o m m i t t e d to pr o d u c i n g a q u a l i t y newsletter. The fact that this p r i n t i n g prob l e m arose w ith the issue in w hich we not only a n n o u n c e d a major increase in T . M . H . S. m e m b e r s h i p fees, but also asked for early payment of those fees, caused us pa rt ic ul ar e m b arrassment, be cause we had stated that the i n c r ease was n e c e s s a r y if we were to preserve the superior q u a l i t y of our publication. We s i nc er el y hope that none of our members were d i s s u a d e d from r e n e w i n g their me m b e r s h i p s in the Toro n t o Marine Historical Society because of the ap pe ar an ce of the M i d - S u m m e r issue of "Scanner", and we promise that we will do our ve ry best to ensure that this sit u a t i o n is n ever allowed to de ve lo p again. * * * * * M A R I N E NEWS In the M i d - S u m m e r issue, we made m e n t i o n of the resale of the Fednav Group "ocean-lakers" FE DERAL ST. LOUIS, (a) S E L K I R K SETTLER (91), and FE DERAL RICHELIEU, (a) CAN A D A MARQ U I S (91), to the a f f i l i a t e d Federal Pacific (Liberia) Ltd., and the i n t e n t i o n of the new owners to r e c h r i s t e n the vessels (c) FEDE R A L FRASER and FE DERAL MACKENZIE, respec tively. We rather suspect that most lake s h i pping o b servers as sumed that the pair of former Misener Shipping, G l a s g o w - b u i l t ships w o u l d move to o p e r a t i o n on the Pacific Ocean and that they w ould not be seen in the lakes again. Such, however, has proven not to be the case. For several days, b e g i n n i n g on Labour Day (September 2nd), FEDERAL M A C K E N Z I E was m o o r e d on the east wall of the Toronto East e r n Gap, still wearing a Misener blue hull, but with s u p e r s t r u c t u r e and stack in Fednav colours, and now r e g i s t e r e d at Manila, the Philippines, in stead of Nassau, Bahamas. FEDERAL MACKENZIE was in Toronto to u n l o a d a very u n u s u a l cargo, c o n s i s t i n g of the first sh ipment of major parts for the u l t r a - m o d e r n p r i n t i n g presses w h i c h will be i n s t a l l e d in the new V a u g h a n T o w nship p r i n t i n g plant of "The T o r o n t o Star", T o ronto's only rem a i n i n g "evening" newspaper. The equipment was manufactured in Augsburg, Germany, and in Middlesex, New Jersey, by the German manuf a c t u r e r , MAN Roland, and w hen in full p r o d u c t i o n in mid-1993, the six new presses will be able to produce 4 0 , 000 full-colour-illustration copies of the n e w s p a p e r per hour. It is to be assu m e d that there will be more s h ipments of this equipme nt by water as time passes.
