Wilson, Treasurer, 14th September, 2006 * * * Editor's Note to the Financial Statement: It gives us pleasure to present for the inspection of the members the financial report for the Toronto Marine Historical Society for the fiscal year 2005-2006. The previous year, we made a profit (for the first time in several seasons) and there is a small profit again this time. However, we cannot afford to slip into a loss situation again and, as a result, your Executive Committee had no alternative but to consider and approve an increase in the membership fees for the 2006-2007 season. We continued to be able to manage "Scanner" production costs, but our saving in that area was offset by yet another increase in postage. The continued rise of the Canadian dollar again reduced the premium on U. S. funds. The Silent Auction was not quite the over-the-top event that it was the previous year, but it still was an important source of income and we thank all who donated and who bid on the items. We lost several more senior members who "crossed the bar" during the year, and some non contributing members dropped by the wayside. We are working on our own information website on the internet and a number of older, out-of-print issues currently are viewable on the web, but we truly need to encourage our younger friends to join T. M. H. S. They need to know that the best historical information does not always come for free on the internet! As always, we extend sincere thanks to Bill Wilson, our Chief Purser, for tending the So ciety's books for another year, as well as for receiving memberships and for serving as site and menu arranger for the Annual Dinner Meeting. * * * * * MARINE NEWS Despite the efforts of Rochester city officials, the fast ferry SPIRIT OF ONTARIO 1 remains there, still unsold. Prospective purchaser Euroferries Ltd. has been unable to complete the necessary financing or to secure wharf space at Dover, England, and meanwhile the tab for keeping the ferry laid up continues to mount. Other parties reportedly were interested in the ship but none have yet stepped forward with a cheque.
