The Illinois

The steamer Illinois arrived at Detroit yesterday morning. She will stop at Detroit to repair her starboard wheel and will not come down this trip. Her freight and passengers came down on the May Queen this morning. Her regular time for sailing again is on Monday evening next. The Ocean on Monday evening will take up her freight and passengers, and the Illinois will sail from there to Lake Superior on Tuesday morning.

The Illinois left Ontonagon on the 14th inst. She was detained five hours off Eagle Harbor by a dense fog, arriving at Portage Lake the following day at 7 P.M.; met steamer North Star at the Entry, bound up, the schr. New London and one other, unknown, were there unloading. Left Portage Lake on the 16th at 3 A.M.; met steamer Planet at the Entry bound down, and steamer Michigan at Granite Island, bound up. At Marquette the bark DeSoto and schr. Huntress were loading. Left Marquette at 3 P.M., and at 9 o'clock same evening, when off Pictured Rocks, lost the starboard wheel, from which point the steamer was propelled by one wheel only. The bark Fontanelle and schr. Challenge and J. Fretter were in the Sault Canal; while those vessels were towing by the Fontanelle ran her jib-boom foul of one arch damaging it seriously, also the pantry. Met the schr. Dart and one unknown vessel in the Sault river, bound up; steamer Cleveland at Detour, Northern Light at Thunder Bay, and City of Cleveland off Lexington.

The Illinois brought down 180 tons of copper, 72 tons iron ore, 120 beer bbls., some miscellaneous freight and 40 passengers.
