Ninth Supervising District Application have been made in writing to the subscriber, SUPERVISING INSPECTOR for said District, to inspect the Steamer City of Buffalo of Monroe in the State of Michigan whereof The Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana R. R. co. are owners, and A. D. Perkins is Master, I having performed that service, now, on this 20 day of July AD. 1857, do certify, that she was built at Buffalo in the State of New York, in the year 1857; of 2026 21/95ths tons burthen, and is in all respects staunch, sea-worthy, and in good condition for navigation, having suitable means for escape from the main to the upper deck in case of accident; that she is provided with 79 state rooms, with 229 berths, has 20 permanent cabin and 51 extra or moveable cabin berths, and has suitable accommodations for 300 cabin passengers. That she has also berths suitable for deck or other class passengers to accommodate 200 persons. That she is a Steamer sailing to and from inland ports, a distance of five hundred miles or upward, and is permitted to carry 200 deck passengers. That she is provided with two low pressure boilers, 27 feet long, and 138 inches in diameter, of cylindrical form, with 200 4 inch return flues in each, constructed of iron of 5/16 of an inch in thickness, and made in the year 1857; that they are in all respects conformable to law. That each boiler has been subjected to a hydrostatic pressure of 67 1/2 pounds to the square inch; that the maximum working power was 59 determined by the rule prescribed by the Act of August 30th, 1852, has two auxilliary Steam Pumps & two blow cocks & passes to convey Steam into the hold That there are 2 safety valves, with 70 884/1000 square inches area; that the load prescribed to each is such as to allow but 50 pounds pressure per square inch 1 left in charge of the engineer, and not withdrawn from interference of the officers of the boat. Has 2 supply pipes of 4 inches each in diameter, and has sufficient means to keep the water at all times and under all circumstances up to four inches over the flues. Has 1 steam-pipe of 28 inches in diameter. Has 1 low pressure engine with cylinder 76 inches in diameter, and 12 feet stroke. Has 2 forcing pumps of 7 inches plunge and 60 inches stroke each, worked by main engine. Has 2 water gauges and 2 steam guage, all properly secured. Has 2 fire forcing pumps one being a rotary of 8 inches stroke each, and 4 inches in diameter of plunge, worked by hand. Has 700 feet of hose, 83 buckets, and 16 axes. Has 8 life-boats in good order, and 4 oars to each . Has 250 cork life preservers, and 250 floats, containing 1500 superficial feet. Has additional steering apparatus. wheel tiller & tackles aft. Signal Lights complete.
I further Certify, That the equipments of the vessel throughout, including pipes, pumps, and other means to keep the water up to the point aforesaid, hose, boats, life-preservers, spark arresters, blocks, rigging, anchors, and other things, are in conformity with the provisions of law; and that I declare it to be my deliberate conviction, found upon the inspection I have made, that the vessel may be employed as a Steamer upon the waters herein specified, without peril to life from imperfection of form, materials, workmanship, or arrangement of the several parts, or from age or use; and I further certify, that the said vessel is to run within the following limits, to wit:
From the Port of Buffalo N.Y To the Port of Monroe Michigan touching at the intermediate places, and back; and also to other ports, and on waters usually navigated by boats of the same class. State of New York Ninth Supervising District,
Personally appeared before me, the undersigned, a Notary Public, in and for Erie County, Augustus Walker duly appointed Supervising Inspector of Steam Boats for the Ninth Supervising District, and made solemn oath that the annexed Certificate of Inspection is just and true.
