Night And Day

A perfectly normal summer's day in Port Hope harbour around the turn of the century. The dredge Nipissing is busy deepening the harbour, removing the bar built up by the Ganaraska river. One of the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company steamers lies alongside the wharf at the small passenger depot, while a couple strolls along the wharf watching the dredge at work.

The colourist who tinted this picture did a fairly skillful job of lighting the wooden pier and the windows of the steamboat and barge. Shame that no one told them we're looking north at the moon!
