Pilgrim (Schooner), struck pier, 17 Jun 1855

PILGRIM Schooner, broached too entering Erie Harbor and ran into the Government Pier and Lighthouse, destroying the latter and losing her head gear. Property loss $1,000.

COLLISION.---We are informed by Capt Dobbin, who came down from Erie yesterday,
that the schooner PILGRIM, from this port for Erie for a load of coal for Chicago, ran
foul of the pier, damaging her cutwater and head gear. Her bowsprit struck the beacon
light on the pier and overturned it. She would repair at Erie

LIGHTHOUSE GONE.--We are indebted to captain Woodruff for the following copy of
a letter received by him this morning:
      OFFICE SUPERINTENDENT OF LIGHTS
      Erie, Pa. June 18, 1855
      SIR.--It becomes my duty to inform you of the destruction of the Beacon
Light at this place. Yesterday a vessel---schooner PILGRIM---coming in
struck the pier and houses and capsized the house.
      The Light apparatus, together with the house, is a total loss. I have
caused a temporary light to be erected until you shall arrive.
