      Feb. 28, 1855 (casualty list)

      . . . . .

The barque GREAT WEST, of and from Buffalo, with a cargo of railroad iron and merchandise for Chicago, was at anchor yesterday afternoon north of this port, between the Lake View House and Gross Point, in distress. She had lost everything attached to the foremast above the cap, also her main boom, and what little canvas she had was badly split. Her center board was also out of order, and she was completely disabled from working into port. The wind was blowing fresh down the lake, and there was considerable sea running.---(Chicago report)

      . . . . .

The barque GREAT WEST remained at her anchorage north of this port, at 7 o'clock last evening. A tug went to her twice during the day, but could render no assistance, as her center board is foul, and she could not enter the harbor as it now is. She had on board 4,150 barrels of salt, consigned to L.L.Williams. It is probably insured. The vessel is reported as leaking, but we have seen noone who has visited her from whom to obtain reliable nformation. ---- Chicago Tribune

THE "GREAT WEST"- On Sunday afternoon, the barque GREAT WEST was towed into our river from the anchorage she has retained since Friday last. In the gale of Tuesday, when off Milwaukee, her fore and main topmasts went by the board, carrying with them their running rigging. The canvas is badly split and she will need considerable refitting. She did not, as reported, make much water, and will not need docking. ------- Chicago Tribune
