Dauntless (Schooner), capsized, 1 Sep 1829

LAKE DISASTERS.--The Schooner LAKE SERPENT, Capt. Wright, left here about four weeks ago, for Put-in-Bay, Islands. It has been ascertained that she arrived there, and having taken in a cargo of stone for the harbor at this place, departed on her return. Her long absence began to excite suspicion of her being lost; this was strengthened by the report of some passengers, who landed here from on board the Steamboat HENRY CLAY, who stated that they saw a dead body floating between the Islands and Sandusky Bay; but that Capt.Norton made some groundless excuse for not taking it up. All doubts upon the subject was dissapated on Thursday last by finding the bodies of the captain and his brother, who were Ezera and Robert Wright, on the Lake shore, in Lorain county. It is supposed the SERPENT being loaded with stone, sprung a leak, and sunk. It is believed four persons besides the Wrights were on board, two of whom were Mr.Van Alstine, from Huron Co.,and Alonzo Atwell of the town of Dover in this county.
The schooner DAUNTLESS, Capt. Arquet, of U .C. was capsized in a squall, a short distance below Erie, Pa., in foolishly endeavoring to carry all sail, in order to keep ahead of the Steam-boat WILLIAM PENN, which luckily was about half a mile astern when the accident occurred. Much praise is bestowed upon Captain Wright and crew, who took eleven persons from the wreck, which went down before they had reached the Steam-boat.
