Lycoming (Propeller), U140416, man killed, 21 May 1887
- Full Text
Chicago.---While the propeller LYCOMING, of the Anchor Line, was lying at the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific elevator Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, a most terrible accident occurred, which resulted in the killing outright of Edward Friends, third engineer of the vessel. The vessel's machinery was in motion to exhaust the water from its cylinders. Mr. Friends was engaged on some work near the crank pit, when he lost his footing and fell down the shaft. His body was caught in the ponderous machinery, and before it could be stopped he was frightfully mangled, death being instantaneous. The deceased was 25 years
of age, and lived at Buffalo.
