"Capt. Donnely who visited the wrecked schooners HANNAH BUTLER and JURA, has returned, both vessels are a total loss. He went up with the steamer JOHN A. McDONALD with wrecking apparatus, but the gale was so severe that he could not reach the JURA, ashore on Gull Island. The gale prevented work and the craft pounded severely. She knocked a hole in the bottom and 1,200 bushels of grain disappeared. The vessel was then abandoned and stripped of her sails and her rigging and all movable objects. The cargo was owned by Mathews of Toronto and insured in the Commercial Union. Donnelly says there was not sufficient grain rescued to pay wrecking expenses. The JURA on Friday jumped over the bar, on Saturday was forced back and went to pieces."
