Goldsmith Maid (Tug), aground, 2 Sep 1873

As the schr. R.J. GIBBS was being towed up Niagara River yesterday by the small tug GOLDSMITH MAID, the line parted at the head of the river, nearly opposite the foot of York St., and the vessel would have gone ashore but for the prompt action of the Captain in casting anchor; as it was she struck slightly once at the stern. The tug became disabled by the line getting afoul of the wheel, but the difficulty was remedied in a short time and the GOLDSMITH MAID (without assistance of another tug as stated in the Express) towed the GIBBS into Blackwell's canal without further trouble. It is thought the GIBBS received no serious damage. The wind ebing fresh the waves rolled too heavy at the mouth of the river for the short tow-line used.
