Calumet (Propeller), U126237, aground, 27 Nov 1889

The steambarge CALUMET went ashore Wednesday night near Chicago. She is a total loss. The Evenston Life Saving crew rescued the crew. She was bound from Buffalo with coal and had been built at Buffalo in 884.

      Capt. James Ash is at Chicago, Quinn, the diver, reported that the soldiers are using the place near where the CALUMET is sunk for a shooting gallery. Quinn is therefore unable to get at the wreck. Mr. Ash has appealed to the authorities at Washington.

      The first gold medals which were ever awarded to an entire crew in the United States Life Saving Service by the government were given last week to the Evanston crew for the brave rescue of the crew of the CALUMET, which went ashore at Fort Sheridan, Lake Michigan, last Thanksgiving Day. The recipients of this high honor are Capt. L.O. Lawson, George L. Crosby, E. B. Fowler, William Ewillg, W.L. Wilson and Jacob Loining, who, with the exception of the captain, are all students in the Northwestern University. The rescue was accomplished in the face of what seemed certain death, as the waves dashed high up on the perpendicular clay cliffs, down which the life boat was lowered by the soldiers of the fort.

The engines of the tug A.J. WRIGHT are to be put into the I.N. FOSTER being converted to a steamer, the A.J. WRIGHT when rebuilt will get the engines of the steamer CITY OF CHARLEVOIX and the boilers of the wrecked steamer CALUMET.
