- The "before" face of a before-and-after pair of stereoviews illustrating shipping in the Chicago River at the time of the Great Fire of 8 Oct 1871. The perspective is from just behind and above the Rush Street bridge where a number of teams wait for the bridge to close. Lining the banks of the river are a succession of schooners. A tug tows another two-masted schooner towards the open bridge. In the background to the right is the Central Elevator

- This "before" image was published some years earlier by J. Carbutt, of Chicago as number 188 of his "Views of Chicago and Vicinity" series entitled "Chicago River from the Rush Street Bridge" with Carbutt identified as the photographer.
Carbutt also marketed this as "No 75 Junction North and South Branches Chicago River" - Inscriptions
